Established in 1999, the Rescue Dive Team or Marine Rescue Team as it is known today was created by Captain Larry Heninger. This specialized team of rapid response water rescue experts was created to administer a program for the city of Virginia Beach, which provides for the immediate response to drownings, boats in distress,  anything water related.

As the team has evolved, we have combined the three aspects of water rescue to become one of the regions most highly trained and efficient volunteer Special Operations teams. Our membership consisting of specially trained divers, rescue swimmers and coxswains hold national certifications thru ERDI, USLA and the American Red Cross agencies.

We specialize in search techniques, locating and recovering patients from hazardous situations. We patrol the beaches, and inland waterways of Virginia Beach 24/7 365 days a year. The team has 5 rescue boats outfitted with side scan sonar and other speciality equipment as well as three response trucks.

The Virginia Beach EMS Marine Rescue Team only continues to evolve with the most highly trained, motivated and skilled individuals cuppled with the most advanced equipment.  Our team currently consists of about 50 members. Members hold certifications as Crewmembers, Coxswain, Diver and or Rescue Swimmer. or all 4.

Captain Sarah Druy is the current team Squad Commander.

Members are on call 24/7, 365 days a year. All of our members must pass a rigorous physical fitness test, safety equipment knowledge/usage tests, Emergency Vehicle Operations training, USCG and other water and marine speciality testing and certifications. This is in order to ensure the team maintains a high degree of standard for readiness in all seasons and conditions, to be prepared for any call at any time.

Our Motto : "Water Rescue that's what we do" is exemplified by every member of this team! If you feel you have what it takes to become part of this team continue to look around this site and contact us.
